IN THIS LESSON
Those successful with battling triggers have a toolbox of techniques to help ward off an unhealthy reaction.
Experiment with different tools to see which work best for you.
Imagine working in construction and having no tools. How successful would you be at your job? Not very.
Whether you’re a home builder, a surgeon, or a farmer, having the correct tools is essential to success.
It’s the same with trauma survivors. We need tools at our disposal to achieve success. The type of tool, frequency of use, and level of effectiveness varies by person.
What are these tools? They include grounding techniques, mindfulness & meditation exercises, creative expression, somatic tools, containment strategies, support systems, and self-care routines. Let’s take a closer look at each. Then, experiment! Try a variety of tools and decide which work for you.
Time to Reflect
Question 1: As with anything, tools help make jobs easier to successfully complete. What tools do you use in your professional job? Imagine doing the same job without them. How would that fare?
Question 2: Trauma trigger tools vary. Why might a tool work really well for one person and not another?
